Memorial Day...a Day to Remember Our Heroes

and Have a Grateful Heart

By By Karen Hellier May 26, 2011

This weekend is Memorial Day Weekend. To many, especially today's youth, it means just an extra day off from school. Hopefully we will all take advantage of one of the memorial day activities listed in this edition of Macaroni KID, so that we can instill in our children, and reinforce withing ourselves, the sacrifices of those in the military that lost their lives for our freedom. I find myself having to make a conscious effort to talk to my kids about those who fought in wars, and how without their sacrifices we would live in a very different country today. Hopefully they will come to understand as they get older, just how much those sacrifices meant.

There are parades and celebrations in various towns near us. I am listing the Memorial Day Parades in the area in this article because it will be so much easier for you to find if they are all in one place:

Noank Memorial Day Parade – 10 a.m., begins on Main Street, proceeds as follows: Main to Pearl, to Chester, to High, to Sylvan, to Ward, to Mosher to Route 215 to Noank Valley Cemetery.

North Stonington Memorial Day Parade – 10 a.m., from the Grange Fairgrounds on Wyassup Road, down Wyassup Road, through the Village on Main Street then along Route 2, back through the village to the site of the old Wheeler Middle School for the Memorial Day Ceremonies; in case of severe weather such that the parade must be cancelled, there will be a Memorial Service held at the North Stonington Grange Hall at 10 a.m.

Norwich Memorial Day Parade – noon, from St. Patrick’s Cathedral down Broadway to the Monument Area of Chelsea Parade; the Memorial Day Commemorative Ceremony will start after the procession, about 1:15 p.m. at Chelsea Parade.

Old Saybrook Memorial Day Parade – 10 a.m., from Stop & Shop parking lot on Elm Street down Route 1 to Main Street, ending at veterans’ memorial monuments on the Town Green, where a memorial program will be.

Salem Memorial Day Parade – 10 a.m., parade starts on Hartford road at Music Vale and proceeds north. Memorial service at Town Green will start within 10 minutes after parade ends.

Mystic Memorial Day Parade — 2 p.m., from Water Street, Mystic; services start around 3:15 p.m. at the VFW post at 60 Stonington Road.

Whatever you do this week, please take a few moment to pause and remember those who have died in service to our country, and those who are currently serving and be grateful for the freedoms we have due to their sacrifices.

Have a wonderful week everyone!
